\paperw19995 \margr0\margl0 \plain \fs20 \f1 This work was painted for the Council of the city of Nuremberg and it remained in the City Hall until 1627, when it entered
the collection of Maximilian I of Bavaria. The title of the work seems to be inaccurate as Mark the Evangelist, represented in the panel with St. Paul, was not one of the twelve apostles. The inscriptions underneath warn against false prophets and are
probably a reflection of the profound changes under way in Europe during the years of Martin LutherÆs Reformation.
