His documented activity commenced in Florence after 1437. His early work (\i Relaxation of the Carmel
ite Rule\i0 , ca. 1432, Florence, Carmine) was influenced by the painting of Masaccio, while the \i Corneto Tarquinia\i0 \i Madonna\i0 shows the influence of DonatelloÆs dynamic line. The splendid \i Annunciation\i0 in the Florentine church of San Lor
enzo displays a fresh naturalism inspired by Fra Angelico, but has warmer and brighter colors. Later he toned down his initial plasticism in a quest for more fluid and linear elegance and a delicate transparency of color: \i Coronation of the Virgin\i0
(1441-47, Florence, Uffizi) and \i Adoration of the Magi\i0 (ca. 1442-45, New York, Metropolitan Museum). The extremely popular \i Madonna and Child with Two Angels\i0 in the Uffizi dates from his later work. The harmonious composition and freshness of
color of the frescoes in the main chapel of Prato Cathedral (1452-64) make them his masterpiece.
