Working initially as a goldsmith, he came under the patronage of the Medici and, along w
ith Pollaiolo, was one of the leading figures in the Florentine art of the second half of the fifteenth century, at the head of an important workshop with a number of illustrious pupils like Leonardo. In his sculptures Verrocchio toned down the sharp and
marked line derived from Donatello to achieve pictorial effects of chiaroscuro: \i Lady with Nosegay\i0 and \i David\i0 (both in Florence, Bargello). The influence of Pollaiolo can be seen in the silver relief representing the \i Beheading of the Bapt
ist\i0 for the altar of San Giovanni (Florence, Museo dellÆOpera del Duomo). Invited to make the equestrian statue of Bartolomeo Colleoni (1479-88) by the republic of Venice, he used DonatelloÆs monument to Gattamelata as a model but transformed its mea
sured harmony in an effort to produce effects of compressed energy and expressive power.
