\ATXsh255 After an initial apprenticeship with Giovanni Bellini, whose influence can be seen in the \i Madonna and Child with Two Saints\i0 (1504-05, Venice, Galleria dell'Accademia), he was influenced by Giorgione. He adopted the latterÆs delicately shaded coloring, but
already showed an inclination toward monumentality of composition. His works from this period include the organ doors of San Bartolomeo in Venice (ca. 1508) and the altarpiece of San Giovanni Crisostomo, also in Venice (1510). Moving to Rome in 1511, he
decorated a room in the Villa Farnesina with frescoes based on OvidÆs \i Metamorphoses\i0 . Among the masterpieces of his Roman period are two pictures of the \i Pietα\i0 (ca. 1516, Viterbo, Museum Civico and 1516 St. Petersburg, Hermitage) and the decora
