\ATXsh255 A singular figure in the troubled period through which Florence passed at the turn of
the fifteenth century, he had little contact with official circles. He collaborated with Cosimo Rosselli on the frescoes in the Sistine Chapel in Rome, but soon was influenced by Flemish realism (\i Visitation\i0 , Washington, National Gallery). He proposed an
unusual conception of antiquity, in which the classical myth was used to evoke a primitive and savage period in history (\i Scenes of Primitive Humanity\i0 , New York, Metropolitan Museum and Oxford, Ashmolean Museum). In the last phase of his career he ado
pted some of the teachings of Leonardo (\i Madonna and Child with Angels\i0 , Venice, Collection Cini), Fra Bartolomeo, and Raphael.\ATXsh4607 \par
