1. REQUIREMENTS:
PC DX2/66 or up ( Pentium is recommended )
8 MB ( 16 MB is recommended )
SVGA 800x600 high color *small fonts*
2 MB free space on hard disk
2x CD ROM or up
Sound Card 16 Bit
Win'95 or Win 3.11
You should have 2 Mb free space on the hard disk where you want to
install "Virtual St.Petersburg" and 600K free space on the hard disk,
where Windows directory is located.
You should have the following settings: 800x600, high color; *small
fonts*. Installator of "Virtual St.Petersburg" will check the current
settings.
To change the settings in Win'95 you may click "Start", then
"Settings", then "Control Panel", then "Display", and then you may
set the necessary settings.
To change the settings in Win 3.1 you may enter "Main" Windows
Group, then "Windows Setup", then "Options", then "Change System
Settings", then "Display" and then you may select the necessary
Display settings. To find out, what graphic card do you have in your
computer, use MSD command in DOS. You will have to restart
Windows after changing the settings.
2. INSTALLATION.
Installator will suggest you to choose the letter of your hard disc to
install Virtual St.Petersburg and will check available amount of space
on it and the current settings of your computer.
Installator will suggest you to install the fonts, which are necessary to
support English and Russian versions of the product.
For Win 3.11 users: if Video For Windows is not installed on your
computer, you should enter VFW directory on the CD ROM and run
Setup.exe file.
After installation is completed you have in Virtual St.Petersburg 7
applications:
"Virtual St.Petersburg With Virtual Walk" - contains virtual walk
mode and interactive book mode; runs under Win'95;
"Virtual St.Petersburg" - contains an interactive book mode; runs
under Win 3.11 and Win'95;
"Help";
"Help in Russian";
"Font Installation" - useful in case if you did not installed the fonts
during the installation of the product;
"Puzzle" - gives you a possibility to play Puzzle with a number of
St.Petersburg sights and any other picture you may down load from
your computer;
"Uninstall" - uninstalls Virtual St.Petersburg from your hard disk.
4. NAVIGATION.
4.1. When you run "Virtual St.Petersburg With Virtual Walk" or
"Virtual St.Petersburg", you get at first the presentation screen with
the collage of sights and three video clips. You may skip the
presentation by pressing any key.
The CD-ROM contains two main parts or modes - Virtual Walk (
runs under Win'95) and Interactive Book ( runs under Win 3.11 and
Win'95 both ).
4.2. Virtual Walk Interface.
If you run "Virtual St.Petersburg With Virtual Walk" application,
after the presentation screen you get the screen with the map of the
central part of St.Petersburg and the window with 3-dimensional
view of the Palace Square. Use arrow keys of keyboard to move and
mouse to click an "active " buildings ( the cursor changes its shape on
those buildings ).
You may also click other districts on the map - the parts of Nevsky
Prospekt and Neva River Embankment.
Click Help button to get the help.
Avoid to come too close to the buildings' walls - it may cause an
error in the program.
When you are in Virtual Walk mode and you click an "active"
buildings on the window or Book button, you go to Book interface,
which presents interactive Book about St.Petersburg. You may
change or switch Off music and change other options of the interface.
4.3. Interactive Book Interface.
You have the screen, which looks like an open book.
Note, that all service functions, such as Search, Options, NoteBook,
Demo, Help, Exit are *under the book-cover* at the bottom line of
the screen. You may open the said book-cover by mouse. The system
reminds you about this by opening and closing the said book-cover,
when you enter the Book interface at first time.
Music is On and Narration is On, when you enter the book interface.
You may change these settings by clicking the buttons with the
images of note and microphone on the top-left part of the screen.
Only "General Info" and "Time Line" chapters have narration.
You may change the settings using Options button under the book-
cover at the bottom line of the screen. Open the book-cover by
mouse.
You may play with any control on the screen.
Features:
"Map" chapter provides you 3D map of the central part of the city.
Drag the rectangle on the right page and click the objects on left
page;
"Tours" chapter provides panoramic views ( 10-50 slides in each ) of
the most beautiful ensembles of the city;
"Virtual Walk" returns you to virtual walk mode around the center of
the city;
"Practical Info" provides you lots of information, including useful
addresses and phone numbers, prices in the hotels, Talking Dictionary
and more.
5. FULL SCREEN 3D ANIMATION of St. Isaac Cathedral, Christ
Resurrection Church and Smolny Cathedral.
You may start 3D full screen animation of architectural ensembles
from Video Guide chapter or from the corresponding architectural
ensemble' screen. When you run full screen 3D animation, you may
get it in the standard DOS AVI window - it depends on the current
settings on your computer. Animation in that window may run
slowly. In this case change the window to full screen mode by the
standard ALT+ENTER combination.
To terminate the full screen 3D animation press ESC button.
6. TECHNICAL NOTES.
Highly recommended to cache your CD ROM drive ( see Help for
SMARTDRV.EXE in MSDOS ).
You should set at least 25 MB Virtual Memory size, if possible.
We also recommend to close all not necessary applications while run
Virtual St.Petersburg.
