- ( In an effort to keep Chuck DeBaun from having to field too many queries
- I have placed an ascii copy of the proposal on:
- uvaarpa.virginia.edu:public_access/Storage/posix.serial.proposa
- where it will remain for an undefined period of time.
- This version of the file has been slightly awk-ed to make it more
- unix-friendly w.r.t carriage control. - Steve Majewski <sdm7g@Virginia.EDU> )

- Please forward the following letter to others who may be frustrated
- by the current state of support in UNIX for removable serial media.

-
-
- To all users of serial media (computer tape and CD-ROM),
-
- For the last two years, a subset of the POSIX Supercomputing Profile
- group has been working to extend POSIX standards for support of
- removable serial media. For a variety of reasons, including the economy,
- the active membership in the subgroup has decreased to the point that
- work cannot continue without additional support and attendance.
-
-
- A Birds Of a Feather(BOF) meeting was held during the January 1993 POSIX
- meeting to evaluate our options. The conclusions
- were:
-
- 1. I should draft this note.
-
- 2. This work deserves its own working group and
- a request will be made to create a POSIX Study Group.
-
- Though initially started in the Supercomputer group, this
- is not uniquely a supercomputing issue. Industry standard
- serial media should be usable for process dependent data
- on any computer with a compatible drive.
-
- 3. We should also consider providing standards for handling
- CD-ROM. There was no expertise in the working group.
-
- Enclosed is a very brief partial description of the
- current (tape oriented) proposal.
-
- The Removable Serial Media Proposal includes proposals for
- handling:
-
- 1. Exclusive access to the device.
- Sharing a serial device is like attempting to simultaneously
- play two movies off the same video tape, or playing one while
- recording another on the same video tape.
-
- 2. Operator assisted mounts.
- Suitable devices may be distant from the controlling terminal,
- or the process may be executing in batch.
-
- 3. Medium verification.
- In order to ensure the integrity of the data, it is necessary
- to, minimally, verify that the proper medium, tape volume for
- instance, is mounted.
-
- 4. Data security/file level access.
- At many sites data is treated as secret. The individual user
- is granted permission to see data on a file by file basis.
- The only way to support this is via file level access, not the
- usual UNIX device level access. (It is understood that device
- level access must also be supported so that current procedures
- do not break.) A further level of security is gained through
- a catalog, which is specified in the proposal as "not to be
- precluded".
-
- 5. Stable and predictable behaviour of the I/O routines across platforms.
- Applications cannot be portable between computers of differing
- manufacture, unless the I/O routines behave in a predictable, and
- preferably identical, manner on ALL machines. This is not the
- current state with regard to serial media.
-
- The ASCII text of the proposal will come out with the POSIX .10
- Supercomputing Profile mailing. For those not on the list, I can send
- it to you via e-mail. I would like to have PostScript available, but
- we no longer have a technical editor.
-
