  3.             INVITATION TO JOIN IEEE POSIX
  4.          P1003.7.2 Software Administration (Install)
  5.               MOCK BALLOT GROUP

  7. The POSIX System Administration Working Group (P1003.7) has been
  8. developing the POSIX software administration interface, P1003.7.2.
  9. This standard describes the requirements for software administration,
  10. i.e. the functions surrounding local and remote software installation.
  11.  
  12. The draft standard is based on the Hewlett-Packard Software
  13. Distribution Utilities, with substantial modification and extensions.
  14. The function included in this draft includes a standard format for
  15. distribution media and a set of commands to create, copy, install, and
  16. list the contents of the media.  Also included are commands to list
  17. and to remove all or portions of the installed software.  All of these
  18. commands are specified to work for both local and networked
  19. installations.

  21. P1003.7 will be conducting a Mock Ballot of the P1003.7.2 draft
  22. starting 1 March 1993 and running through 31 March 1993.  The purpose
  23. of this non-binding, unofficial ballot is to seek feedback on this
  24. work from interested parties and to prepare for the formal ballot
  25. tentatively scheduled to begin early in 1994.

  27. The PostScript files that comprise the draft will be made available
  28. via anonymous ftp.  If you require a hard copy of the draft, we will
  29. try to have it in the mail during the week before the start of mock
  30. ballot.

  32. While we would appreciate extensive comments, a simple yes vote, or a
  33. no vote with an explanation about why this is not an acceptable
  34. direction, would be very helpful.

  38. Those who reply will be notified as soon as the draft is available and
  39. provided with information on how to supply ballot comments.
