- I don't think this is the easy way out, nor that it's a solution to

- The easy way out is to specify threads and let everyone continue to use
- a bunch of inconsistent interfaces for a common capability if they can't
- use threads for some reason (like, they have to support dusty-deck
- runtimes like every X toolkit in existence).

- The hard way is to define a consistent interface that can be provided
- on a variety of systems, and while you're about it clean out some
- of the cack in existing implementations (select/poll/O_NDELAY/...).
