NIST USERS' FORUM ON APPLICATIONS PORTABILITY PROFILE (APP)
and OPEN SYSTEMS ENVIRONMENT (OSE)
Thursday, November 15, 1990
__________________________________________
Sponsored by:
The National Computer Systems Laboratory
National Institute of Standards and Technology
U.S. Department of Commerce
__________________________________________
This workshop is the sixth in a continuing semi-annual series on
the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)
APPLICATIONS PORTABILITY PROFILE (APP) and its application to
OPEN SYSTEMS ENVIRONMENT (OSE). The APP defines a common set of
standards (or directions) and is designed to address the broad
functional areas of applications portability and
interoperability.
These APP Users' Forums are designed to provide users and
providers with the opportunity to get information about, and
provide feedback on, NIST proposals regarding the adoption and
evaluation of an integrated set of standards to support the APP
and Open Systems.
As currently defined the APP identifies seven functional areas:
1) operating system services;
2) program services;
3) data management services;
4) data interchange services;
5) user interface services;
6) graphics services; and
7) network services.
This workshop will provide a status report on standards and
activities in the APP, OSE, IEEE, and JTC1 (international
activities) areas, and solicit users' opinions of what priorities
should be applied to future work items. As usual, specific
issues will be covered in more detail. When possible, experts
from other organizations or users' groups may present their
particular viewpoint on given issues.
While the APP Users' Forums are intended primarily to address
users' concerns, both users and vendors/integrators are
encouraged to attend.
