- It *seems* that I have run into an NNTP bug/limitation with the latest posting
- of dmake...
-
- I have been using MD4 article verification for quite a while now. Although
- others have told me that it has alerted them when bad copies were received, I
- have not personally encountered a problem. Today I finished posting dmake
- version 3.8 to c.s.misc and went to rkive it on uunet when invalid MD4
- checksums presented themselves to me... This was strange since the copy on
- my system was archived with no problems. I decided to repost a single part
- in hopes that it would either make it the second time or would point me to
- the problem. It seems to have done the latter... :-( There is an apparent
- assumption made in the NNTP server that lines will not exceed 512 bytes
- in length. At least that is where the problem is on each of the damaged
- parts...
-
- Dmake has lines in few of the shars that exceed 512 characters in length...
- So how do we fix the problem ? I normally would just post a patch but the
- patch would have lines > 512 and the patch would go through NNTP and .....
-
- For those of you with ftp access, I have placed good copies on ftp.uu.net
- in the directory ~/comp.sources.misc/volume27/dmake. Also, from part00:
- dmake is available via anonymous ftp from watmsg.uwaterloo.ca
- (129.97.141.9) as:
-
- pub/dmake/dmake38.tar.Z - compressed tar archive
- pub/dmake/dmake38.zoo - zoo archive
- pub/dmake/dmake38-msdos-exe.zoo - MSDOS executable zoo archive
- pub/dmake/dmake38-msdos-exe.zip - MSDOS executable zip archive
- pub/dmake/dmake38.shar01 - xx part shar archive
- ... (get all parts)
- pub/dmake/dmake38.sharxx
-
- and comes in several archive formats. Choose the one that best
- suits your needs.
-
- For those sites without ftp access, send electronic mail to uunet!netlib
- (netlib@uunet.uu.net) with only the following as the body of the message:
-
- send volume27/dmake/part11 from comp.sources.misc
- send volume27/dmake/part34 from comp.sources.misc
- send volume27/dmake/part35 from comp.sources.misc
- send volume27/dmake/part36 from comp.sources.misc
-
- The good parts will be returned to you via email.
-
- Sorry for the problems... If my quick assumptions about NNTP are incorrect
- please let me know so that I can spend some time and track the problem down
- so it doesn't happen again. Another thing to add to the checklist...
