  2. IUD stands for Intra-Uterine-Device.  It is a coiled piece of plastic which is inserted into the womb.  IUDs are often called coils. 
  3.  IUDs work by preventing a fertilised egg from being planted in the womb.  They are almost 100% effective.  
  4. IUDs must be fitted by a doctor.  Women using coils must have a regular check-up to see if it is still in place and is not causing any irritation.
