  3. The embryo slowly grows in the womb for about 38-40 weeks.  It is warm and well protected in a bag of watery liquid.  
  4. The embryo gets food and oxygen from its mother through a tube called an umbilical cord.  This is connected to the placenta.  
  5. Food and oxygen cross from the mother's blood to the baby's blood through the placenta and the umbilical cord.
