The embryo slowly grows in the womb for about 38-40 weeks. It is warm and well protected in a bag of watery liquid.
The embryo gets food and oxygen from its mother through a tube called an umbilical cord. This is connected to the placenta.
Food and oxygen cross from the mother's blood to the baby's blood through the placenta and the umbilical cord.
