When girls are aged between about 8 and 15 years old their reproductive system undergoes a sequence of events which is repeated every month. This is called the menstrual cycle. A girl or woman produces one egg each month.
1: When an egg has been produced, but not fertilised, the lining of the womb passes out through the vagina. This is called a period.
2: Bleeding stops after 5-7 days.
3: Another egg is released into the womb after about 26 days and the woman can become pregnant.
