Neurons are nerve cells. They link together to form nerve fibres which transmit nerve impulses.
These impulses are small electrical and chemical changes that travel along a nerve after they have been stimulated by light, sound, touch and heat. For example, if you burn your finger a nerve impulse travels from it to your brain.
There are different kinds of neurons. Nerve cells that transmit impulses from the senses (the eyes, ears etc.) to the brain and spinal cord are called sensory neurons. Nerve cells that conduct impulses from the brain are called motor neurons.
