  1.   The Spinal cord
  2. Together with the brain, the spinal cord forms the central nervous system.  The spinal cord is encased in and protected by the backbone.
  3. A substance called cerebro-spinal fluid protects the spinal cord from rubbing against the backbone.
  4. Messages from nerve cells, called neurons, travel up the spinal cord to the brain.  Impulses from the brain travel down the spinal cord to the muscles.
