  1.   The oesophagus links the mouth with the stomach.  It passes through the chest.  Once food enters the oesophagus it moves through the body automatically.  
  2. We get food into the oesophagus by chewing and then swallowing.  Muscles in the oesophagus push the food down in waves.  This is called peristalsis.
