The windpipe is called the trachea. It is the beginning of a series of tubes that lead from the back of the mouth through the neck and chest and into the lungs. The trachea is supported by C-shaped strips of cartilage that keep it open even when you bend your neck. The base of the trachea divides into two tubes called bronchi, which go into the lungs.
