  1.   Comparing different cells
  2.  
  3. This activity involves looking at a range of plant and animal cells under an optical microscope.
  4.  
  5.  Get together a number of slides of different cells.  You can use the ones listed below or use some that your school may have.

  7. Onion cells
  8.  
  9. Elodea pond weed
  10.  
  11. Pond mud
  12.  
  13. Prepared epithelial slides 
  14.  
  15. 1) Using the microscope look at the different samples of cellular materials.  Make a note of the magnification that you are having to use to look at the different samples.
  16.  
  17. 2) Draw up a table listing the similarities and differences.
  18.  
  19. 3) Draw a diagram showing one cell from each sample you observe.  You might find more than one sort.  Draw examples of all the types you see.
  20.  
  21. If you have trouble finding suitable cells, use the Photographs section of the Media Index to select some from there.

  23. A few years ago, people studying Biology used to scrape epithelial cells from the inside of their mouth. Nowadays, most schools do not allow this to happen. Why do you think this is?
