All human cells are produced by a kind of cell division called mitosis. All human cells originate from a cell called a zygote which is formed when an ovum and sperm fuse together during fertilisation.
During mitosis the zygote divides in such a way that the cells produced from it have the same number of chromosomes as the zygote.
