  2. This is the first in a series of pictures of SMIL, one of the first Swedish
  3. computers, built at Lund University in the mid-fifties.
  4.  
  5. The original SMIL consisted of about 2000 vacuum tubes, had a forty-bit
  6. word length and a 2048-word drum memory (later expanded to 4096 words
  7. of ferrite core memory). SMIL was the main university computer for
  8. more than 15 years and wasn't decommissioned until 1972 (when it was
  9. replaced by a Univac 1108).
