welcome to spinsane's oldschool ascii reviews
for lost in the translation, issue #3. mad greets and respect to black
jack for doing so many things for the scene.
anyway, the review system i'm going to stick to is a 1-10 scale not
based
upon the bell curve :). i feel that oldschool ascii should be an
extension
of the artist's creativity, and should reflect thought, skill and
general
oldschool ascii knowledge to do well...i'm pretty tough, so a lot of
these
pieces will be ranked pretty hard. don't get mad, just try to take the
criticism to heart and remember any accolades i gave your piece were
well
deserved...
amd lastly, please don't be offended by any of these reviews or
comments.
i judge myself and my asciis by VERY high standards (however often i may
meet them :) and i view all of your asciis by that same standard.
anyways... on with the reviews.
gENERAL rEVIEW tEMPLATE! (actually size may vary)

CAFE______________|
| a two part ascii that didn't impress too much. while arl
shows|
| a pretty decent grasp of how to draw a nice background, his
| fonting on this piece could use some improvement. on the 1st
| font, the best character was the k and the cut and paste
a's..|
| i liked the second one better, but that was mostly because
| of the nice vertical background... although it lacked some
| originality as a standard ami/x style b/g.

|_brn-prel.asc_|_brane________________|_PRELUDE______________________|
| i like this decent little funky piece... while the style is
| rather simple, it show signs of brane unique ascii finger-
| print that shows he should keep practicing and honing his
| skills. none of the letters really stuck out as exceptional
| in any way (except for the nice use of the letter 'u'), but
| the piece had a nice cohesiveness to it that bumps it up a
| couple of points.

brane________________|_SUBLIME______________________|
| this ascii isn't really very good in any way. the lack of b/g
| lack of symetry in the lettering, the lack of cohesiveness
and|
| a probably lack of effort mar this work in a major way. the
| only real gems were the 'b', which would've made a great 'e',
| and the 'm' which is kinda neat... the rest of the fonting is
| rather poor.

|_drn-sub.asc__|_daeron_______________|_SUBLIME______________________|
| this second sublime logo of the pack is one of my fav
| oldschool logo in this pack. daeron makes excellent use of
| different ascii character than the slashes, hyphens and
| underscores used most commonly in OS ascii. excellent work
| with connections in the 'blime' part of sublime in parti-
| cular. still something seems missing, and that is probably
| the lack of any real new innovations or higher level ex-
| trapolation of his style... still, a very nice piece.

| this kids got moxy, see? i like these fonts quite a bit, but
| they remind me a lot of oldschool c4nnibal fonts... couple
| that with a mediocre background and you get a decent piece.

404____________________|
| again, a regurgitated yet well done already been seen font
| nothing wrong with them, just nothing in particular above
| average. this piece has a good sense of layout, and object
| placement, but the fonting needs work, and spice that 404
| dot matrix font up a bit... high scores for layout

WHALE__________________|
| this is my favorite lethargic piece of the pack... again
| showing a well developed sense of layout, plus a show of
| some thought-out fonting... some of those letters are ill
| in their simplicity... especially the last e, the s and the
| p, which is the most unique lettering in the piece (nice P
| actually. the h and a in whale could definately use some
| work, while the rest of the letters could use some tweaking

:_rp-subl.asc__|_rippa________________|_SUBLIME______________________|
| since it said 80x50 in afs.com, i had to bust of rv.exe to
| view this one (so don't worry rippa, this was reviewed as
| intended). this was an eye opener at first when i saw it in
| 80x50 because i thought i saw all kinds of subliminal fonts
| and shit in it (i thought it said black thursday for a
second)|
| but then i got used to 80x50 and saw the sublime font. i
| thought the little arrows shooting out the tops of the
letters|
| were a bit unnecessary, and all but the s and the e were
| slightly above average... the s and the e were well above
| average. the bg was pretty weak, demonstrating that b/g'ing
| is INDEED an important skill in the ascii trade. but anyway,
| a pretty fair piece... pretty nice.

:_sub-afte.asc_|_subsonic_____________|_THE
AFTERLIFE________________|
| the fonting on the 'after' is pretty bad... trying to fit too
| much into too small a space. this technique DID work better
| on the 'life' portion, which was kind of spiffy, but not very
| impressive. the background shows promise, but lacks balance.
| keep improving, there is potential here

:_sub-dee.asc__|_subsonic_____________|_DIODE________________________|
| this piece is pretty decent. the i is pretty plain. the 1st
| d isn't bad, but i like the breaking out style on the o, and
| the way the d and e flow together at the end... the
background|
| is also an improvement over the sub-afte.asc, showing a very
| well done (whether intentional or not) diagonal focal point
| in the center that makes the viewer's eyes move as would a
| well done painting... still could've been improved on a lot
| though :)
| 5.5 / 10

\\-------------?----------------------?------------------------------/
:_sub-mil.asc__|_subsonic_____________|_MILAN________________________|
| this piece is kind of cool in that it incorporates a single
| bar that connects all the letters from behind or in front.
| i like that kind of shit alot. BUT that kind of stuff has to
| be used in conjunction with creative fonting and shaping, as
| well as a creative and well balanced background. this piece
| has the background, a rather minimal but very nice necrom
| style piece, but that fonting is very simple and hackneyed.

:_sub-vol1.asc_|_volatile_____________|_TWISTED MAN
(COLLY)__________|
| as a patient in the adhd treatment program, reviewing collies
| isn't usually my favorite thing to do. a short attention is
| not the best thing to have in your corner when you run into
| one of these things. anyway, in this colly volatile
represents|
| his style rather well, but really limits the utilization of
| variations or even different styles. one dimensional for the
| most part, the styles in this colly ARE well developed...
| especially the wayward and garbage asciis. those asciis rate
| 6.5 each for excellent backgrounds and decent fonts. the
| other asciis look like less work was put into them, and they
| suffer accordingly. while none of them was bad, they lacked
| font development and backgrounds which i know volatile
| could've done.

PROPHECY_________________|
| this ascii is pretty fucking ill. the p is just dope... the
| rest is indecipherable, but in a pretty well polished way. i
| think it could've been cleaned up a bit (in an abstract sorta
| way), but overall its pretty nice. besides this general need
| for minor tweaking, the only criticisms i could make would be
| to possibly balance the upper and lower halves of the piece
| more, and to work on what i think is the 'h'... its weak when
| compared to the rest of the font...
