  4. welcome to spinsane's oldschool ascii reviews

  6.     for lost in the translation, issue #3. mad greets and respect to black
  7.    jack for doing so many things for the scene.
  8.  
  9.    anyway, the review system i'm going to stick to is a 1-10 scale not
  10. based
  11.   upon the bell curve :). i feel that oldschool ascii should be an
  12. extension
  13.   of the artist's creativity, and should reflect thought, skill and
  14. general
  15.   oldschool ascii knowledge to do well...i'm pretty tough, so a lot of
  16. these
  17.   pieces will be ranked pretty hard. don't get mad, just try to take the
  18.   criticism to heart and remember any accolades i gave your piece were
  19. well
  20.   deserved...

  22.   amd lastly, please don't be offended by any of these reviews or
  23. comments.
  24.   i judge myself and my asciis by VERY high standards (however often i may
  25.   meet them :) and i view all of your asciis by that same standard.

  61. shows|
  62.      |      a pretty decent grasp of how to draw a nice background, his

  64.      |      fonting on this piece could use some improvement. on the 1st
  65. |
  66.      |      font, the best character was the k and the cut and paste
  67. a's..|
  68.      |      i liked the second one better, but that was mostly because

  70.      |      of the nice vertical background... although it lacked some

  72.      |      originality as a standard ami/x style b/g.

  82.      |      i like this decent little funky piece... while the style is

  84.      |      rather simple, it show signs of brane unique ascii finger-
  85. |
  86.      |      print that shows he should keep practicing and honing his

  88.      |      skills. none of the letters really stuck out as exceptional
  89. |
  90.      |      in any way (except for the nice use of the letter 'u'), but
  91. |
  92.      |      the piece had a nice cohesiveness to it that bumps it up a
  93. |
  94.      |      couple of points.

  104.      |      this ascii isn't really very good in any way. the lack of b/g
  105. |
  106.      |      lack of symetry in the lettering, the lack of cohesiveness
  107. and|
  108.      |      a probably lack of effort mar this work in a major way. the

  110.      |      only real gems were the 'b', which would've made a great 'e',
  111. |
  112.      |      and the 'm' which is kinda neat... the rest of the fonting is
  113. |
  114.      |      rather poor.

  124.      |      this second sublime logo of the pack is one of my fav

  126.      |      oldschool logo in this pack. daeron makes excellent use of

  128.      |      different ascii character than the slashes, hyphens and

  130.      |      underscores used most commonly in OS ascii. excellent work
  131. |
  132.      |      with connections in the 'blime' part of sublime in parti-
  133. |
  134.      |      cular. still something seems missing, and that is probably
  135. |
  136.      |      the lack of any real new innovations or higher level ex-
  137. |
  138.      |      trapolation of his style... still, a very nice piece.

  190.      |      p, which is the most unique lettering in the piece (nice P

  206.      |      since it said 80x50 in afs.com, i had to bust of rv.exe to

  208.      |      view this one (so don't worry rippa, this was reviewed as
  209. |
  210.      |      intended). this was an eye opener at first when i saw it in
  211. |
  212.      |      80x50 because i thought i saw all kinds of subliminal fonts
  213. |
  214.      |      and shit in it (i thought it said black thursday for a
  215. second)|
  216.      |      but then i got used to 80x50 and saw the sublime font. i
  217. |
  218.      |      thought the little arrows shooting out the tops of the
  219. letters|
  220.      |      were a bit unnecessary, and all but the s and the e were
  221. |
  222.      |      slightly above average... the s and the e were well above
  223. |
  224.      |      average. the bg was pretty weak, demonstrating that b/g'ing
  225. |
  226.      |      is INDEED an important skill in the ascii trade. but anyway,
  227. |
  228.      |      a pretty fair piece... pretty nice.

  288.      |      bar that connects all the letters from behind or in front.

  290.      |      i like that kind of shit alot. BUT that kind of stuff has to

  292.      |      be used in conjunction with creative fonting and shaping, as
  293. |
  294.      |      well as a creative and well balanced background. this piece

  296.      |      has the background, a rather minimal but very nice necrom

  298.      |      style piece, but that fonting is very simple and hackneyed.

  312.      |      isn't usually my favorite thing to do. a short attention is

  314.      |      not the best thing to have in your corner when you run into
  315. |
  316.      |      one of these things. anyway, in this colly volatile
  317. represents|
  318.      |      his style rather well, but really limits the utilization of
  319. |
  320.      |      variations or even different styles. one dimensional for the
  321. |
  322.      |      most part, the styles in this colly ARE well developed...
  323. |
  324.      |      especially the wayward and garbage asciis. those asciis rate
  325. |
  326.      |      6.5 each for excellent backgrounds and decent fonts. the
  327. |
  328.      |      other asciis look like less work was put into them, and they
  329. |
  330.      |      suffer accordingly. while none of them was bad, they lacked
  331. |
  332.      |      font development and backgrounds which i know volatile
  333. |
  334.      |      could've done.

  348.      |      rest is indecipherable, but in a pretty well polished way. i

  350.      |      think it could've been cleaned up a bit (in an abstract sorta

  352.      |      way), but overall its pretty nice. besides this general need
  353. |
  354.      |      for minor tweaking, the only criticisms i could make would be
  355. |
  356.      |      to possibly balance the upper and lower halves of the piece
  357. |
  358.      |      more, and to work on what i think is the 'h'... its weak when
  359. |
  360.      |      compared to the rest of the font...
