hi, ascii scene. it's mankind, the belgian bitch. it's been a while. believe
me or not, but i already miss the ascii days. the fights, the pressure, the
strategy, the hate, the love, the adrenalin. i don't know why, but i do. i'm
not that much of a perfectionist in general, but ascii-wise, i consider
myself to have been one, and i called it quits, when i was faced with the fact
i lacked the energy and the money to run our shit properly. i don't know what
keeps bringing me and so many others back to a computer art medium, while i've
never felt the urge to converse in #ascii, to get to know the others. just a
thought. anyway, here's a short update concerning my life, in case some of you
gave a rat's ass. i'm a beginning counterfeiter now.. and i really suck at it.
we're giving a new definition to the concept "making money". i'm trying to
pass for my last year of high school, as i don't wanna fail again but i'll
have to watch my ass. i feel so antik. haha. speaking of antik, we're still
the inseparable bros we were back then. we're gonna have a dopesmoke-contest
soon, which will show us who's the king of the hill. we met again at this
large-scale rave, but lost each other. that sure sucked. anyhow, writing this
review is about the only thing i feel like contributing to the ascii scene,
so let's go for it. my eyes aren't that exercised anymore, and asciis aren't
able to impress me like they used to. i can't alter that.
so let's kick it with a dull, colorless, drearily review, with no room for
nuance ! mimic 10 didn't really surpass today's poor standards. this doesn't
go for bj, haji and gdr, though. good work, guys. haji gets my pick of the
month, with a big head start.
aetfcbhc.asc - hmm, no. colors don't match - shaping could have been done
better. moreover, i can't figure out what it says. not good.
aetrh2.asc - reminds me of hex corrupt's stuff, but it looks childish.
also, the shaping's too angular.
aetsw.asc - too noisy, too dirty. using alternative characters wasn't
necessary either.
bjasc125.ans - when i first saw this, i thought it sucked, until i under-
stood it. nice concept; very cool shading. the font looks
kind of unfinished. i'ld prescribe a haji remix.
bjasc126.ans - i would've loved the pic if it was more detailed, but it looks
too blurred, although i suspect it was drawn like that deli-
berately. the font lacks some spirit.
bjasc127.ans - the smooth background of this font is a nice founding, but
the font could use some more balance, and a final touch.
bjasc128.ans - in this pic, bj prooves he knows what colors to use. it's
nicely shaded, too.
bjasc129.ans - classic. the only flaw i'm able to spot is the abrubt border
of the right-hand side. i suppose it would've looked more
natural if black jack would've used more of them slashes.
cd!know.ans - sucks for too many reasons. shaping's kind of smooth, though
but that's no excuse for the ascii to suck so shamelessly.
cd!rev.ans - this adds to the belief that handscript ascii fonts generally
suck, unless they're done by kaleidas or discyple.
cd!rules.ans - a nice attempt at a b/w face without shading. too vague
though.
ds-mfin.asc - a one-letter font with a graffiti touch. not bad, but out
of balance.
fe-milan.asc - the font isn't earthshakingly cool, but i must admit i like
the pic.. the chin's too rough, tough.
gdr-neur.asc - looks familiar. and nice !
gdr-quan.asc - this is the quality that's typical of gdr. very nicely done.
gnksoup1.ans - very smooth, but kind of dull.
gnksuprm.ans - better.. i especially dig those fresh colors.
h4-diode.asc - nice and clean shit.. haji's mimic's best font artist, i
think.
h4-futr.ans - the best ascii i've seen in ages - no doubt about it. the
invert-technique's been used, but it's handled correctly
here. killer.
h4-neuro.asc - a clean, nicely streaming haji font. one would murder for it.
k!breed.asc - keetar has got his own unique shaping style, and i kind of
like it. the pic's not bad, the font is.
k!mmc.asc - a typical keetar scene.. nice. i like it.
ko-diode.asc - looks interesting.. a little bit too abstract, but interes-
ting. it lacks some hajish smoothness.
ko-rital.ans - too filthy, in my judgement.. i don't understand the point of
combining those happy faces with the lines, but maybe that's
my problem.
ko-yan.asc - this pic+font is kind of dissapointing, taking into account
konami's capability. the pic looks too abstract, and the font
is too simplistic.
kpn-cool.asc - very damn cool for a newcomer.. except for the right-hand
eyebrow, the proportions are perfect. good work.
kpn-fusi.asc - looks too 95/96 to my mind.
kpn-main.ans - idem.. reminds me of endless nameless' fonts..
kpn-mtrx.asc - another abstract pic. should've been shaped/shaded better.
m7m-fear.ans - i like m7m's old stuff (odelay, kwest) better than what he's
producing nowadays but this is nice. the brown, yellow and
the blue make up a nice color combination and hiss shaping
is very recognizable.
m7m-k8.ans - looks familiar again. looks kind of (too) basic, but it's
an ok ascii.
m7m-lavz.ans - good lord ! my favorite coffee brand gets its deserved re-
cognition ! concerning the contents, this is a winner, but
it's not what the french call "a good ascii" - i've tried to
remix it, as m7m proposed, but i haven't been able to save
it.
m7m-m7mp.ans - once again, way too basic to impress the austere ascii eye.
m7m-mmc.ans - interesting use of colors, but i've got the feeling one can
produce hundreds of those.
m7m-spin.ans - very basic again, but this is - i have to admit - kind of
spicy.
os-bhc.asc - pic should've been detailed more. the shading of the eyes
looks incorrect, too.
os-soup.asc - now this is better, damnit. this could've lead to a killer
joint with bj.
us-quest.asc - pic/font are nicely integrated. shaping's too rough though.
