1. Installing Video for Windows
----------------------------
This product uses Intel(TM) Indeo(TM) technology and the Video for
Windows(TM) drivers to run the film sequences.
To install "Video for Windows Runtime 1.1" if you chose not to update your
system drivers during installation of Uffizi, or if you want to reconfigure
the drivers because faults have occurred in the film sequences, proceed as
follows:
- Insert the Uffizi CD-ROM in the appropriate drive.
- Open the File Manager utility with the icon in the 'Main' window of
the Program Manager
- In File Manager, select the icon for the drive containing the Uffizi
CD-ROM.
- Open the 'VFWRT' directory in the CD-ROM root.
- Launch the directory's 'SETUP.EXE' command and follow the instructions
provided.
- When the program asks you to, choose the 'Restart Now' option to activate
the newly installed drivers.
See note 5.
2. Listening to the voice-over commentaries
----------------------------------------
The voice-over commentaries in this product are compressed and must be run
with the ACM (Audio Compression Manager) drivers in Video for Windows. These
drivers are usually added to your system during installation. However, if
you change your sound card or reinstall the original drivers of the current
sound card, the ACM drivers may be accidentally overwritten.
This could create difficulties in running the voice-overs. Correct the
problem by reinstalling Video for Windows as directed in note 1 above.
3. Interruptions in voice-overs during 'convivial pursuits'
--------------------------------------------------------
Interruptions may occur in the voice-overs during 'convivial pursuits' when
you move from one image to the next.
This tends to happen if your PC has a small RAM (4 MBytes) or with single-
speed CD-ROM players (150 KB/sec.).
If this fault occurs, enlarge the buffer memory used by the audio driver,
by following these instructions:
- Open the Control Panel utility with the icon in the 'Main' window of the
Program Manager.
- Activate the Driver icon in Control Panel
- Search for the '(MCI) Sound' item in the list of installed drivers and
select it.
- Click the 'Setup' button.
- Move the cursor right as far as it will go.
- Quit Control Panel confirming all changes with OK.
If the problem continues, you may need to expand your PC memory to at least
8 MB and purchase a double-speed CD-ROM player (300 KB/sec.).
4. Notes for users with a single-speed CD-ROM player
-------------------------------------------------
If your PC is fitted with a single-speed CD-ROM player, interruptions may
occur in the voice-over commentaries and in the move-through animations.
Reconfigure the audio driver following the instructions in note 3 above.
5. Switch from the localized version of the multimedia player
----------------------------------------------------------
Video for Windows Runtime automatically installs a new version of the
'Multimedia Player' utility. The new version is in English. Consequently,
menus and dialogue windows will be in English.
6. Advanced graphic modes
----------------------
If your PC is fitted with an advanced graphics board, avoid choosing a
16 million colour or 32000/64000 colour setting.
Some drivers for these settings are not fully compatible with industry
standards and anomalies could occur when you run the program.
You are advised to modify the video drivers by choosing 256 colour settings
with small system fonts (normally shown as 'Small fonts' or 'SF').
Reconfigure with the 'Windows Setup' utility. You may require the Windows
and graphics driver installation disks. Refer to your PC manuals for
further information.
