  6.   How the CD is Organized
  7. -------------------------------------------------------------------------

  9. Level editors and general utilities which are discussed in this book can
  10. be found in the directories \EDITORS and \UTILS.  All other editors,
  11. tools, and utilities are located in \BONUS. Example levels created by
  12. various designers are located in the \WADS directory.  They are separated
  13. into three main categories[md]DOOM levels are in \DOOM1, DOOM II levels
  14. are in \DOOM2, and Heretic levels are in \HERETIC.

  16. Because of copyright issues, some of the files discussed in Episode 3, ôThe Land of the Godsö are not included on the CD-ROM. See Episode 5, Mission 1, Room 2, ôPlaces to Go and People to Seeö for places where you can get these files on the internet.

  19.   Using the CD
  20. ------------------------------------------------------------------------

  22. Most of the editors and utilities and some of the level files included on
  23. this disc must be copied to your hard drive to function properly. The DOS
  24. and Windows install applications will copy the utilities and applications
  25. to your hard drive for you. Refer to the respective rooms in this book
  26. and the documentation files accompanying the programs on the CD for
  27. detailed instructions about configuring and using the programs.
  28.  
  29. To make playing the WADs from the CD easier, the WAD files for each game
  30. appear in \DOOM1\PLAY, \DOOM2\PLAY, and \HERETIC\PLAY. Use these CD
  31. directories as the locations of WAD files in front-end DOOM loading tools
  32. like DOOM-IT and DOOMMENU. The \PLAY directories include only those WADs
  33. that can be played from the CD without special configuration. If a
  34. converted WAD does not exist for your game version, try the conversion
  35. programs located in \UTILS\BONUS to convert them yourself. Follow the DOS
  36. install instructions opposite the CD-ROM to install DOOM-IT or DOOMMENU.

  38. Other WADs and patches can be copied to your hard drive to be played. 
  39. Please refer to the documentation with the WADs and patches for specific
  40. instructions.  The patches, (i.e. \DOOM1\WADS\PATCHES) will alter your
  41. original WAD files (i.e. DOOM.WAD) or the game executable (i.e.
  42. DOOM.EXE), so be sure to backup your game before experimenting! Most
  43. patches provide batch files to extract original graphics and sound,
  44. replacing them with new objects.  These batch files will usually save the
  45. original objects, so they can be restored with a de-installing batch
  46. file. This can be a safe operation, but errors are possible, and that can
  47. leave you with corrupt game files. Make backups!

  50.   Installing software from the CD-ROM

  53. * To install the DOS programs from the CD-ROM,
  54.  
  55.   1.  From a DOS prompt, change to the drive that contains
  56.       the CD-ROM. For example, if the disc is in drive R:,
  57.       type R: and press Enter.
  58.  
  59.   2.  Type DOOMCD and press Enter.
  60.  
  61. You will see an installation application which features buttons for each
  62. DOS application discussed in the book.  Use your mouse to select the
  63. application of your choice.
  64.  
  65. Each application will display a separate page with install options,
  66. giving you the choice to install the software, view    the software's
  67. documentation, and print the software's documentation. Use the buttons
  68. along the bottom of the page to navigate around the installation
  69. application.  The arrow keys allow you to leaf through each page and the
  70. MENU button returns you to the main menu.  Press the HELP button at any
  71. time to review the navigation methods.

  73. * To install the Windows applications from the CD-ROM,

  75.   1.  Start Windows.
  76.  
  77.   2.  Select Run from the Program Manager File menu.
  78.  
  79.   3.  Type N:\SETUP, where N is the letter of your CD-ROM
  80.       drive.

  82.   4.  Follow the instructions provided by the setup program.

  84. The Windows installation application will create a Program Manager Group
  85. named "DOOM Utilities," which contains icons for installing the Windows
  86. programs included on the disc. Click on the ReadMe icons for
  87. program-specific details.
