  7.   How the CD-ROM is Organized
  8. ------------------------------------------------------------------------

  10. Level editors and general utilities which are discussed in this book can
  11. be found in the directories \EDITORS and \UTILS.  All other editors,
  12. tools, and utilities are located in \BONUS. Example levels created by
  13. various designers are located in the \WADS directory.  They are
  14. separated into three main categories[md]DOOM levels are in \DOOM1, 
  15. DOOM II levels are in \DOOM2, and Heretic levels are in \HERETIC.

  17. Because of copyright issues, some of the files discussed in Episode 3,
  18. "The Land of the Gods" are not included on the CD-ROM. See Episode 5,
  19. Mission 1, Room 2, "Places to Go and People to See" for places where you
  20. can get these files on the Internet.

  23.   Using the CD-ROM
  24. ------------------------------------------------------------------------

  26. Most of the editors and utilities and some of the level files included
  27. on this disc must be copied to your hard drive to function properly. 
  28. The DOS and Windows install applications will copy the utilities and
  29. applications to your hard drive for you. Refer to the respective rooms 
  30. in the book and the documentation files accompanying the programs on the 
  31. CD-ROM for detailed instructions about configuring and using the programs.

  33. To make playing the WADs from the CD-ROM easier, the WAD files for each 
  34. game appear in: 
  35. * \DOOM1\PLAY
  36. * \DOOM2\PLAY  
  37. * \HERETIC\PLAY
  38.  
  39. Use these CD-ROM directories as the locations of WAD files in front-end 
  40. DOOM loading tools like DOOM-IT and DOOMMENU. The \PLAY directories 
  41. include only those WADs that can be played from the CD-ROM without 
  42. special configuration. If a converted WAD does not exist for your game 
  43. version, try the conversion programs located in \UTILS\BONUS to convert 
  44. them yourself.

  46. To install DOOM-IT or DOOMMENU, start the DOOMCD menu program (see the 
  47. instructions opposite the CD-ROM or in the "Installing software from 
  48. the CD-ROM" section, later in this file). These two programs are 
  49. located under the "Entering the Abyss" sectionn of the DOOMCD menu.

  51. Other WADs and patches can be copied to your hard drive to be played.
  52. Please refer to the documentation with the WADs and patches for specific
  53. instructions.  The patches (example: \DOOM1\WADS\PATCHES) will alter 
  54. your original WAD files (DOOM.WAD, etc.) or the game executable 
  55. (DOOM.EXE, etc.), so be sure to backup your game before experimenting!

  57. Most patches provide batch files to extract original graphics and sound,
  58. replacing them with new objects.  These batch files will usually save
  59. the original objects, so they can be restored with a de-installing 
  60. batch file. This can be a safe operation, but errors are possible, and 
  61. that can leave you with corrupt game files. Make backups!

  64.   Installing software from the CD-ROM

  67. * To install the DOS programs from the CD-ROM,
  68.  
  69.   1.  From a DOS prompt, change to the drive that contains
  70.       the CD-ROM. For example, if the disc is in drive R:,
  71.       type R: and press Enter.
  72.  
  73.   2.  Type DOOMCD and press Enter.
  74.  
  75. You will see an installation application which features buttons for each
  76. DOS application discussed in the book.  Use your mouse to select the
  77. application of your choice.
  78.  
  79. Each application will display a separate page with install options,
  80. giving you the choice to install the software, view the software's
  81. documentation, and print the software's documentation. Use the buttons
  82. along the bottom of the page to navigate around the installation
  83. application.  The arrow keys allow you to leaf through each page and the
  84. MENU button returns you to the main menu.  Press the HELP button at any
  85. time to review the navigation methods.

  87. * To install the Windows applications from the CD-ROM,

  89.   1.  Start Windows.
  90.  
  91.   2.  Select Run from the Program Manager File menu.
  92.  
  93.   3.  Type N:\SETUP, where N is the letter of your CD-ROM
  94.       drive.

  96.   4.  Follow the instructions provided by the setup program.

  98. The Windows installation application will create a Program Manager Group
  99. named "DOOM Utilities," which contains icons for installing the Windows
  100. programs included on the disc. Click on the ReadMe icons for
  101. program-specific details.
