- Dvpeg 2.8 - dvpeg.doc file
- ---------------------------------
-
- Use: Dvpeg is a DOS based (286 or up) JPEG / GIF viewer that will run
- under DOS, Windows, OS\2.
-
- The JPEG conversion code came from the Independant JPEG Group (more
- info is in the source code file) and a lot of the video drivers came from
- the vgakit41.zip. Their code was free so this is as well.
-
- To run dvpeg use: dvpeg
- or dvpeg picture_name or list_of_picture_names_with_spaces
- or dvpeg <drive> :\ <path> \ <file_mask or file_name>
-
- Option: If you give a list of picture names followed by a '-' character
- DVPEG will show the pictures (pausing for a keypress) and then automatically
- exit.
-
- ADVANCED OPTION: You can pass the name of a config file to DVPEG by giving
- it as the first arguement. This way you can have several different
- configuration files for networks ...
-
-
- Advanced Option
- ---------------
- The first file <path> \ file_name passed to dvpeg will be tested to see
- if it is a configuration (dvpeg.cfg) file. This allowes network users
- to direct the program to a configuration file that has been setup for
- a certain video card and have several configuration files available. It
- also allows normal users to create several configuration files; save them
- under different name; and use them for different defaults ...
-
- Memory requirements: Dvpeg will use a lot of memory if the image is going
- to be panned (typically 1+ meg) and will look for EMS or extended memory.
- If no memory can not be found it will use the hard drive to store the
- temporary information (much slower). So if you want to see something fast
- setup about 1 - 2 megs of EMS or XMS. If you are running out of memory
- then give it some more (some of those 1600 * 1200 images will use 4+M if
- you are panning a hi_color image!).
-
- Memory Problems: If you are running out of memory then most likely it is
- the 'low' or below 640k memory. You will have to remove some drivers or
- other items that are using the lower memory. One way to free up a bit of
- memory (and speed up viewing) in DVPEG for JPEGs is to:
- - use the 1 pass quantizer or Grey scale
- - turn off cross block smoothing (defaults to off)
- - turn off the panning (you can still shrink the image as it shows)
-
-
- To find out about options use just hit F1 at any time.
-
- Check the read.me file for detailed information about vidsetup.exe, dvpeg.exe,
- dvpeg286.exe
-
- Basically:
- vidsetup.exe - allows setting of defaults for the viewer (dvpeg) and
- testing of video modes
- dvpeg.exe - 386/486 jpeg/gif viewer
- dvpeg286.exe - 286 jpeg/gif viewer

- Please send any comments / suggestions to praetzel@sunee.uwaterloo.ca
-
- P.S. Many thanks to my beta testers and those who shared their knowledge.
- I would also like to thank Tom Lane and the IJG along with various
- people who have compiled video information (VGAKIT, VGADOC) that is on
- most big sites.

- This is a list of the supported cards and modes.
-
- More cards and modes are supported with the UNIVESA.EXE program.
-
- IT IS NOT COMPLETE. CHECK VIDSETUP FOR THE FULL LIST OF SUPPORTED MODES
- (or the file modes.h in the source code).
-
- Not all cards from a Mfg will support all of these modes. In most cases you
- will need 1 Meg of video ram for the hi resolution modes and some modes (like
- the hi_color ones) are recent additions and only supported by the most recent
- cards sold. To test a certain mode on your video card/moniter setup use
- vidsetup.exe Usually if the mode is not supported the video card locks up
- and you can't get back to the text screen. The only solution is to reset
- the computer.
