  4. Iran-contra prosecutors convict Clair George but fail on
  5. Poindexter

  8.     He was the first top CIA officer convicted of acts committed
  9. in the performance of duty. That alone makes Clair George a big
  10. catch for the Iran-contra prosecutors. But after six years and
  11. $33 million worth of frustration, his also was a rare
  12. conviction that might stick. A jury convicted the former chief
  13. of the CIA's spy network on two charges of lying to Congress (he
  14. was acquitted on five perjury counts). He could be sent to jail
  15. for 10 years, though it is unlikely he will ever go behind bars.
  16. Still, independent counsel Lawrence Walsh called his conviction
  17. "an important deterrent [against] cover-ups."

  19.     Simultaneously, though, the Supreme Court refused to
  20. review a lower-court ruling that overturned the 1990 conviction
  21. of former National Security Adviser John Poindexter. He and
  22. Oliver North, whose conviction was also reversed, were the main
  23. architects of the secret sales of weapons to Iran and diversion
  24. of profits to the Nicaraguan contras. Ironically, that leaves
  25. former Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger, who angrily
  26. opposed the deal, as the biggest-name defendant remaining. A
  27. federal judge Friday threw out a charge against him of lying to
  28. Congress, but he still faces a January trial on four counts of
  29. perjury and making false statements.
