  4.     DIED. William Shawn, 85, editor; in New York City. A quiet
  5. tyrant of talent and taste, Shawn ruled over the New Yorker, the
  6. weekly magazine that was arbiter of all things literary and
  7. social during his reign from 1952, following the death of
  8. Shawn's legendary predecessor Harold Ross, to 1987, when he was
  9. forced into retirement by the New Yorker's current owner, S.I.
  10. Newhouse. His reign embraced the flowering of such writers as
  11. John Updike and Ann Beattie, as well as the New Yorker's entry
  12. -- initially reluctant but ultimately wholehearted -- into the
  13. world of advocacy journalism with such stories as Rachel
  14. Carson's environmental indictment Silent Spring, James Baldwin's
  15. racial-justice manifesto Letter from a Region in My Mind and
  16. some of the most unrelenting criticism of U.S. policy in Vietnam
  17. in American letters.
