  4. Terrorists ignite two explosions in Manchester and target London

  7.     Since the eruption of sectarian violence in Northern Ireland
  8. 23 years ago, Christmas in Britain has frequently brought the
  9. distinctly unjoyous prospect of Irish Republican Army terrorism.
  10. 1992 is already part of that deadly tradition. At the height of
  11. Thursday's morning rush hour, two bombs exploded in central
  12. Manchester, injuring 64 people. Most of the victims were hit by
  13. flying glass in the second blast after they had sought refuge
  14. from the first near the city's Anglican cathedral. Police,
  15. citing phoned messages, blamed the I.R.A.

  17.     The double hit in Manchester came one day after a foiled
  18. bombing attempt in London. Police discovered and disarmed a
  19. load of explosives hidden in a van parked in central London's
  20. West End. It was the third I.R.A. attack that authorities have
  21. managed to disrupt in the past two weeks, although last April
  22. three people were killed in a spectacular bombing that caused $1
  23. billion in damage to the financial district. In the Northern
  24. Ireland capital of Belfast, meanwhile, 27 bystanders were
  25. injured last week when panic broke out upon discovery of a bomb
  26. hidden in a travel agency. Said Michael Mates, British security
  27. minister for Northern Ireland: "It is a sad fact of life that it
  28. is virtually impossible to deliver total protection."
