MILESTONES, Page 23
DIED. Alexander Dubcek, 70, reformist leader of
Czechoslovakia whose attempt to introduce "socialism with a human
face" during the Prague Spring of 1968 was crushed by Warsaw Pact
tanks; of injuries suffered in an auto accident in September; in
Prague. Though Dubcek's goal in instituting reforms was to
strengthen socialism, the Kremlin feared erosion of party power.
After the crackdown, Dubcek was stripped of his party membership.
He re-emerged in November 1989 to join Vaclav Havel in
proclaiming a democratic Czechoslovakia.
