  4. Investigators find evidence of El Salvador's worst civil-war

  8.     Government officials and their U.S. patrons repeatedly denied
  9. it. But when a team of forensic anthropologists excavated
  10. nearly 60 of several hundred battered skeletons from around a
  11. demolished church in what was once an F.M.L.N. guerrilla
  12. stronghold, they found convincing evidence of what some
  13. journalists and human-rights activists have said for years: as
  14. many as 800 civilians, most of them women and children, were
  15. mutilated, burned and murdered in and around the remote
  16. northeastern town of El Mozote in 1981, by soldiers from the
  17. Salvadoran army's U.S.-trained Atlacatl Battalion.

  19.     The victims' relatives want those responsible tried for
  20. murder, even though a new amnesty law prevents any of the
  21. perpetrators from having to serve time for political crimes.
  22. They would also welcome the final dissolution of the notorious
  23. battalion, as was stipulated under the current peace plan signed
  24. by both the government and the rebels last January. But the San
  25. Salvador government has indefinitely suspended the battalion's
  26. disbanding, claiming the F.M.L.N. has yet to demobilize its
  27. troops according to the schedule. The former rebels claim that
  28. despite advances in political, police and land reform, they will
  29. not meet the Oct. 31 disarmament deadline because judicial and
  30. electoral reforms are lagging, and rebel leaders are still
  31. targets of violence. To break the deadlock, the U.N. proposed
  32. a six-week extension for compliance.
