MILESTONES, Page 23
DIED. Walter Lanier ("Red") Barber, 84, sportscaster; of
pneumonia and kidney complications; in Tallahassee, Florida. For
more than three decades Barber served up a steady stream of
play-by-play palaver for the Cincinnati Reds, the Brooklyn
Dodgers and the New York Yankees. His down-home eloquence
painted pictures for his listeners in the days before
television, and in recent years found him new fans with his
Friday-morning commentary and reminiscences on National Public
Radio.
