  4. The latest round in the Brown-Quayle feud kicks off a CBS rout

  7.     The ultimate irony of the sparring between fictional journalist
  8. Murphy Brown and real-life Vice President Dan Quayle is that it
  9. serves the purposes of one of America's greatest entrepreneurs:
  10. Murphy Brown TV series creator Diane English. Last week's
  11. season opener, pumped up by weeks of publicity, drew an enormous
  12. 44 million viewers to a special hour-long episode. Quayle's
  13. rebuke of the sitcom for supposedly glamourizing single moms was
  14. challenged by such scripted scolding from star Candice Bergen
  15. as, "Perhaps it's time for the Vice President to recognize that
  16. families come in all shapes and sizes."

  18.     Murphy Brown, along with the stellar perform ance of new
  19. Monday-night romantic comedies Hearts Afire (courtesy of
  20. Designing Women and Evening Shade creator Linda
  21. Bloodworth-Thomason) and Love and War (the latest from English
  22. herself), seems likely once again to nail down the evening as
  23. a wholly owned subsidiary of CBS. And the strong Friday night
  24. figures for the new Golden Palace (a spin-off of the successful
  25. Golden Girls) and Picket Fences (a reworking of the rural-gothic
  26. themes of Emmy-winning Northern Exposure) may create a new
  27. bridgehead for the Tiffany Network.
