  8.     Get out the flak jackets. Former Secretary of State HENRY
  9. KISSINGER will face tough questions when he testifies next week
  10. before the Senate Select Committee on POW/MIA Affairs.
  11. Investigators for the committee claim they have constructed a
  12. "damning case" against Kissinger for ineptness and insensitivity
  13. regarding pows and mias during the Paris peace talks in 1973.
  14. The committee has heard from a score of witnesses, including
  15. several Pentagon officials, who maintain that many Americans
  16. were left behind when the Nixon Administration brought
  17. servicemen home at the conclusion of the talks. Insiders say the
  18. hearing will be "tough on Dr. K." Kissinger will be followed by
  19. other heavyweight witnesses, including Al Haig and Acting
  20. Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger. Even Kissinger's old
  21. boss, Richard Nixon, has sought legal advice in preparation for
  22. a deposition on the matter that has been requested by the
  23. committee.

  27.     The Democrats are out to get NEWT GINGRICH, and they've
  28. got some unexpected allies across the aisle as the conservative
  29. House minority whip campaigns for re-election. Gingrich has
  30. earned enmity in abundance for his junkyard-dog tactics. Case in
  31. point: House minority leader Robert Michel. Says a Michel aide:
  32. "Maybe the Democrats can't get Clinton elected, but at least
  33. they should be able to get rid of Newt. It would make our lives
  34. up here so much easier."

  36.     You Call That Nothing?

  38.     No wonder U.N. Inspectors are under fire for reporting
  39. that Saddam's nuclear program never got out of the starting
  40. blocks. Documents they recovered show that Iraq bought enough
  41. material to build 10,000 centrifuges, which are needed for a key
  42. step in enriching uranium. Says an insider: "They're scared to
  43. death there's some hidden installation, maybe underground. There
  44. are no grounds for giving Iraq a clean bill of health."

  48.     Entrepreneurs in the former Soviet Union are selling
  49. military equipment cheap, just in time for those hard-to-fill
  50. Christmas lists. Night-vision goggles, worth thousands of
  51. dollars, are going for as low as $80, while pressure suits
  52. ($15,000), worn by high-flying spy pilots, can be had for $150.
  53. The out-of-work military men selling the stuff have discovered
  54. a fashion premium in Soviet flight jackets, which are fetching
  55. $500. Accessories? Flight helmets with red stars go for $50.
