  4. Will women soon outnumber men as victims? Is a new virus at
  5. work?

  8.     The Eighth International Conference on AIDS was originally
  9. scheduled to be held in Boston. But the organizers, angered by
  10. a U.S. policy prohibiting entry by people infected with HIV, the
  11. AIDS virus, moved it. So it was that more than 11,000
  12. scientists, policymakers and activists trooped to Amsterdam
  13. instead to exchange the latest information:
  14.  
  15.     -- Doctors reported more than two dozen cases of AIDS-like
  16. symptoms in patients who test negative for HIV. The cause is
  17. unknown: it could be a new version of HIV (two are already
  18. known) or an evolved form of an existing one. It could be a
  19. completely different sort of virus. It could even be some sort
  20. of bacterium, or perhaps an environmental factor. Scientists
  21. believe they have already isolated a new virus in patients with
  22. this mock AIDS, but their work needs to be confirmed. Such a
  23. virus could contaminate blood supplies undetected, but because
  24. scientists could develop new blood tests quickly, the danger is
  25. minimal.

  27.     -- Experimental vaccines designed to slow or stop the
  28. progress of AIDS in infected people are showing promise in
  29. several trials. But vaccines to prevent the disease in healthy
  30. people are much farther off.

  32.     -- The AIDS epidemic is at least partly to blame for a new
  33. strain of tuberculosis that is extremely resistant to
  34. antibiotics; the diseases seem to progress much faster in
  35. patients who have both at the same time. Unlike AIDS,
  36. tuberculosis is highly contagious.

  38.     -- Women are now catching AIDS almost as fast as men, and
  39. by the year 2000 they will make up the majority of victims. One
  40. reason: in many societies, women have no influence on their
  41. husbands' sexual behavior and cannot force them to wear
  42. condoms.
