  6.     When the "velvet revolution" brought democracy to his country
  7. in 1989, Vaclav Havel hoped a strong and unified Czechoslovakia
  8. would help anchor a peaceful postcommunist Central Europe. Last
  9. week Havel's vision finally faded when Slovakia's parliament
  10. split the country by declaring its sovereignty. Moments later
  11. Havel stepped down as President of Czechoslovakia, giving up a
  12. long struggle to broker a federal power-sharing agreement. He
  13. may well be the leading candidate when the separate Czech
  14. Republic establishes the new office of president.
