PEOPLE, Page 75Magic Bullet
By MICHAEL QUINN
For months, basketball wizard and U.S. AIDS commissioner
MAGIC JOHNSON has refereed George Bush's war on the epidemic --
and cried foul. Almost as soon as he stepped into his new post,
Magic began a full-court press to increase funds for aids
research and treatment -- and met with frustration. Now the
HIV-positive athlete has in essence issued an ultimatum -- if
there is no move to increase the AIDS budget by the time he
returns from the Barcelona Olympics, he will quit. "He does not
believe the President is doing enough," says Johnson's
spokesman, Lon Rosen. Johnson has also said he would not be
supporting Bush for re-election. Anyone who thought Magic would
be a figurehead knows better now.
