DIED. Eddie Lopat, 73, versatile pitcher who helped the New
York Yankees win five straight World Series championships from
1949 to 1953; of pancreatic cancer; in Darien, Conn. Winner of
166 games, he earned the nickname "the Junk Man" for throwing an
assortment of pitches at different speeds (none terribly fast),
but all with the same motion.
