  4. Election results edge Czechoslovakia along the road of ethnic
  5. dissolution

  8.     Believers in a unified Czechoslovakia may now regret that
  9. Vaclav Havel's 1989 "velvet revolution" wasn't the "Velcro
  10. revolution" instead. Parliamentary elections have revealed
  11. deepening differences between Czechs and Slovaks, thus
  12. increasing the chances that the 74-year-old federation will
  13. become unstitched like the former Soviet Union and Yugoslavia.
  14. Last week, after the autonomy-seeking Movement for a Democratic
  15. Slovakia topped the polling in the Slovak republic, the group's
  16. leader, Vladimir Meciar, pressed his demand for a total
  17. rearrangement of Czech-Slovak relations.

  19.     Prime Minister-designate Vaclav Klaus, whose Civic
  20. Democratic Party won the largest number of votes in the Czech
  21. republic, met with Meciar in two rounds of talks that ended with
  22. mutual accusations of intransigence. "The other side refuses to
  23. accept anything we are proposing," said Klaus, who has the
  24. support of Havel, the country's first postcommunist President.
  25. Part of the problem is that Slovaks believe their economically
  26. depressed republic bears the brunt of Klaus' radical proposals
  27. for privatization and austerity. But several thousand Czechs
  28. signed petitions in Prague calling for an independent Czech
  29. republic, complaining that Slovaks were backward-looking and
  30. even dangerous. Where does the dispute leave Havel? He warned
  31. of a "permanent political and constitutional crisis" and
  32. suggested that he will not run for re-election next month if the
  33. federation breaks apart.
