  4. A controversial video teaches the homeless what to eat on the
  5. streets

  8.     In the age of instant information, the hard facts on
  9. everything from coping with troubled toddlers to touring Nepal
  10. are just a video-club membership away. But in Orange County,
  11. Calif., the how-to tape has gone beyond providing a sort of
  12. microwave education for the perpetually preoccupied. Last week
  13. former nurse Linda Dunlap ran into both praise and scorn for a
  14. video she produced to teach homeless men and women how to
  15. scavenge the trash for contaminant-free food. Staged in a talk-
  16. show format, the tape is five parts useless banter and one part
  17. helpful instruction. Warnings include avoiding discarded dairy
  18. products and punctured fruits. Dunlap has had well in excess of
  19. 100 requests for the video from shelters and aid groups
  20. worldwide.

  22.     Conceptually, a how-to video for the homeless smacks of a
  23. Saturday Night Live sketch gone horribly tasteless. Only those
  24. fortunate enough to wander into a VCR-equipped shelter will ever
  25. view the tape. Moreover, advocates for the homeless argue that
  26. the video signals a dangerous complacency in tackling the
  27. issues of hunger and poverty. But to her critics Dunlap has one
  28. reply: "Get real!" The video, she insists, acknowledges a
  29. serious public health issue and aims to save lives.
