THE WEEK, Page 27HEALTH & SCIENCEEt Cetera
SHRED OF EVIDENCE
In 1978 Bob Crane, the star of TV's Hogan's Heroes, was
bludgeoned to death in his bed in Scottsdale, Ariz. The crime
remained unsolved for 14 years, until investigators re-examined
a thread of brain tissue found in a rental car. Last week they
arrested John Henry Carpenter, a video-equipment salesman, and
charged him with the murder, which he denies. Forensic
scientists matched the tissue with a sample from Crane's bloody
pillowcase. Complained Carpenter's attorney: "How the flesh
sample was overlooked for 14 years is beyond me."
