  5.     Tonight's Morning After

  7.     JAY LENO may or may not be the hardest-working man in show
  8. business, but he's certainly got the hardest job. After Johnny
  9. Carson's lavishly covered farewell to the Tonight show, Leno
  10. faces the impossible task of measuring up to a legend. He did
  11. seem unusually tense his first week. He lacks Carson's easygoing
  12. charisma, and he barrels through interviews as if he can't wait
  13. to get to the end of the question sheet. But his monologues are
  14. sharper than Carson's, and he has given the show a needed coat
  15. of fresh (mostly purple) paint, with hipper musical guests (the
  16. Black Crowes) and fewer Las Vegas geriatrics. One question: How
  17. many of the people lamenting Johnny's departure actually
  18. watched him during the past 10 years?

  21.     Pockets Full of Rue

  23.     What A.R. Gurney is for the old money set, Richard
  24. Greenberg is for yuppie arrivistes: a rueful chronicler of
  25. meaningless manners, misbegotten mores and loves gone wrong. THE
  26. EXTRA MAN, off-Broadway, focuses on a figure common to both
  27. circles: the unattached man of uncertain sexuality and
  28. undeniable charm who is always on hand for friends and in fact
  29. lives through them, sometimes in ways meddlesome or even
  30. Machiavellian. Boyd Gaines, who won a Tony Award as a saintly
  31. gay doctor in The Heidi Chronicles, balances amiability and
  32. creepiness in the role. He is ably backed by TV stars Adam Arkin
  33. (Northern Exposure), Laila Robins (Gabriel's Fire) and John
  34. Slattery (Homefront).

  37.     Vibrant Tapestry

  39.     The latest batch of Young jazz Turks has produced some
  40. dynamite soloists -- but few great bands. This is due partly to
  41. the high level of competition among the up-and-comers and partly
  42. to their inexperience in the art of collective improvisation.
  43. Trumpeter ROY HARGROVE, in his third Novus album, The Vibe,
  44. manages to offset both factors by teaming up with outstanding
  45. sidemen -- alto-sax player Antonio Hart, pianist Marc Cary,
  46. drummer Gregory Hutchinson and bassist Rodney Whitaker -- who
  47. stitch a vibrant tapestry around his own fat sound. At 22,
  48. Hargrove has the tone, sensitivity and power to emerge as his
  49. generation's man to beat on the golden horn. Fortunately, he
  50. also has the intelligence to share the stage.

  53.     A Long and Winding African Road
  54.  
  55.     Last year's winner of Britain's esteemed Booker Prize, THE
  56. FAMISHED ROAD (Doubleday; $22.50), is a long, winding
  57. allegorical novel that draws no line between fact and fantasy.
  58. The Nigerian-born, London-based Ben Okri explores the spiritual
  59. interior of an African nation struggling to reconcile its
  60. traditions with modern dislocations. Sorcerers, ghosts and
  61. two-legged dogs mingle with villagers and politicians in this
  62. hallucinatory narrative that reconnects Nigeria to its origins.
  63. Okri's uncompromising vision and verbal energy carry him swiftly
  64. through 500 pages. The reader too moves along, although a little
  65. less magic and a bit more realism could have given this extended
  66. tour de force more variety and emotional punch.

  69.     Chillin' Out

  71.     Future film scholars will look back on 1992 and proclaim,
  72. "The glancing charm! The arcane wit! The epitome of cinematic
  73. sophistication . . . Wayne's World!" It surely seems so,
  74. considering the latest competition. In ENCINO MAN, a caveman
  75. (Brendan Fraser) thaws out in a more primitive outpost of
  76. civilization: a San Fernando Valley high school. Because his
  77. guide through California folkways is MTV's rude dude Pauly
  78. Shore, the movie has its share of chillspeak. Michael DeLuise
  79. makes a droll villain -- he's like Woody Harrelson after a brain
  80. switch -- and for maybe 20 minutes the E.T. plot twists are
  81. endurable. After that the pain gets somewhere between mental and
  82. dental. Even Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey seems on the Noel Coward
  83. level compared with this Stoned Age outrage.
