  4. An underground nuclear blast tells the world where to go

  7.     In what amounts to an obscene gesture to the rest of the
  8. world, China exploded a nuclear warhead with a yield of 1 million
  9. tons of tnt at its underground test range in far northwestern
  10. Xinjiang province. It was the largest such blast the Chinese
  11. have ever detonated and far bigger than the 150-kiloton testing
  12. limit the U.S. and the former Soviet Union have been observing
  13. under a 1974 agreement.

  15.     Chinese officials confirmed that the explosion was for
  16. military purposes, but then blandly added that Beijing's testing
  17. program has "exercised restraint" to conform with the
  18. government's "basic position for complete prohibition and
  19. thorough destruction of nuclear weapons."

  21.     Increasingly at odds with post-cold war norms, China also
  22. claims there is no truth in Western charges that it secretly
  23. sells nuclear and ballistic missile technology to Third World
  24. countries, colludes to evade customs duties or violates
  25. copyright agreements.
