  4.     The plot of the story was familiar to any science-fiction
  5. fan. The crew of a rocket ship returns to earth after a long
  6. space voyage only to find everything changed. It was exactly that
  7. way for Sergei Krikalev. When he blasted off in May 1991, he was
  8. one of the proudest of elites, a Soviet cosmonaut. Last week,
  9. when he came back after 313 days in orbit, he found a different
  10. world.

  12.     Krikalev landed on the snowy plains of Kazakhstan, an
  13. independent country. He was wearing the emblems of the U.S.S.R.,
  14. but it no longer exists. His hometown is called St. Petersburg
  15. again, not Leningrad. Understandably, Krikalev's knees were a
  16. bit rubbery. He was given a whiff of smelling salts and a cup
  17. of soup.

  19.     He had followed events on the ground with interest, for
  20. politics kept him aloft. After the aborted coup in August, newly
  21. emergent Kazakhstan, where the launch facilities are located,
  22. demanded that a Kazakh cosmonaut be put into space. The mission
  23. directors complied last October but had to talk a less than
  24. thrilled Krikalev into staying in orbit an extra five months to
  25. help train the new crew.
