  6.     A panel of economists at the private National Bureau of
  7. Economic Research has declared that the recession is officially
  8. over. What's more, these experts say, the recession technically
  9. ended in March 1991 -- 21 months ago. The panel based its
  10. finding on the fact that several measures of economic activity,
  11. including nonagricultural employment and industrial production,
  12. bottomed out around January and March of 1991 and had upward
  13. trends afterward. Though the recession may be technically over,
  14. don't break out the champagne -- 9.2 million people are still
  15. unemployed.

  20.     Wanted: experienced computer executives willing to help a
  21. blue-chip CEO get out from under the worst crisis in company
  22. history. IBM has sent out such a Mayday. Answering the call were
  23. retired vice chairmen Paul Rizzo, 64, and Kaspar Cassani, also
  24. 64, who will help chairman and chief executive John Akers get
  25. Big Blue back on an even keel. Still unanswered, though, is the
  26. question of who asked the pair to return. Some analysts think
  27. Akers did it, to placate IBM's increasingly dissatisfied board.
  28. Others suspect the board brought Rizzo and Cassani back, as the
  29. first step toward easing Akers out.
