1. INSTALLATION
Text-Based Installation
If you cannot install TIME Man of the Year using the graphical
installation program (INSTALLD.BAT), you can perform a text-based
installation using the TEXTINST.BAT file. This file can be found
in the DOSINST\MANUAL directory located on the TIME Man of the
Year compact disc.
TEXTINST.BAT creates a directory on the "C" drive called MOY93D.
The batch file then copies all program files into that directory.
To run the text-based installation, exit this file and type the
drive letter of your CD-ROM drive. For example, if your CD-ROM
drive is assigned letter "D" type D: and press [ENTER]. From
your CD-ROM drive you can run the text-based installation by
typing at the DOS prompt: CD\DOSINST\MANUAL and press [ENTER].
Then type: TEXTINST and press [ENTER].
NOTE: Do not install the program from any DOS menus
or launching programs. Make sure you are at a
DOS prompt!
Once installed, your can then run TIME Man of the Year. To start
the program, switch to the MOY93D directory on your "C" drive, and
type at the DOS prompt: MOY93.
INSTALLING SOUND BOARDS:
If you currently own a copy of Compact Publishing's
TIME Almanac, CNN NEWSROOM Global View, or National
Geographic's THE PRESIDENTS, Groliers's ENCYCLOPEDIA
(DOS versions) installed on your computer, you do not
need to set up any special line in your config.sys
file to hear the audio which accompanies the TIME Man of
the Year video clips. The program uses the same
sound device drives as the the above listed products.
If you have a sound blaster compatible audio board, or
one of the others listed in the user's guide, and do
not have a sound driver previously set up in your
config.sys file by one of the above listed products,
call Compact Publishing and our support staff will
assist you.
If you own a Sound Blaster or Sound Blaster Pro card
and the vidoes sound garbled in TIME Man of the Year
but not in your other CD products, call Compact
Publishing at (202) 244-4770 for technical support.

3. MEMORY REQUIREMENTS AND HINTS
To run the TIME Man of the Year videos smoothly, and achieve
the fastest overall performance while running the program,
you should have approximately 530 kilobytes of RAM available
of conventional memory (also called "low memory").
If you are not sure how much low memory is available to run
programs, you can run a check on your system. This memory
check can be run on all versions of DOS above 3.0.
To run a check on your system, exit all programs and go to
your DOS prompt. At the DOS prompt type: CHKDSK and press
[ENTER]. The very last line which appears on your screen
will indicate how many "bytes free" you have available in
low memory.
NOTE: Users of DOS 5.0 or higher can type: MEM and press
[ENTER] to run this check. The line which reads "largest
executable program size" is the line which indicates how
much low memory is available to run programs.
If the number of available bytes free is lower than 520,000
kilobytes, you should probably try and raise that number by
unloading any TSR's you have running.
USING HIGH MEMORY
If you have DOS 5.0 or higher, you should also try loading
any equipment device drivers (located in your config.sys
file) into High Memory. Sound adapter cards, CD-ROM
drives, and scanners are examples of equipment with device
drivers which use a large amount of conventional (low)
memory, unless you manually load them into high memory.
You can also try loading software drivers and executables
into high memory as well. Typically, software drivers and
software commands, which are located in both the config.sys
and autoexec.bat files, can also be loaded into high
memory. Even DOS itself can be loaded into high memory.
To load device drivers into high memory, you will need the
following:
1. At least 1 megabyte of RAM on your computer.
2. A high memory manager program.
DOS 5.0 comes with its own memory manager programs --
HIMEM.SYS and EMM386.EXE.
DOS 6.0 comes with a sophisticated memory management
program called MEMMAKER. Once run, MEMMAKER automatically
configures all drivers and TSR's into high memory.
There are also other memory manager programs which can be
purchased at any computer store and work well. Two such
programs are QEMM-386 and 386MAX.
DOS 5.0 AND HIGH MEMORY
DOS 5.0 comes with its own memory manager program --
EMM386.EXE. If you have DOS 5.0 and you do not see this
manager in your config.sys file, your should add the
following two lines near the top of the file (usually just
under the BUFFERS line):
device=c:\dos\himem.sys
device=c:\dos\emm386.exe RAM 1024
NOTE: Type the lines in the order shown above.
Also, if you have Windows installed on your machine, Windows
probably set up the memory manager upon installation. The
lines in the config.sys file will probably read
"device=c:\windows\himem.sys" and "device=c:\windows\emm386.exe".
Once you have set up the memory manager in the config.sys file,
most device drivers located below these line can be loaded into
high memory.
NOTE: Not all device drivers can be loaded into high
memory. Usually equipment device drivers can be loaded
high, but some software drivers may not. For example, the
device driver which TIME Man of the Year program loads,
(device=sndbk12.sys) CANNOT be loaded into high memory.
LOADING CONFIG.SYS DRIVERS INTO HIGH MEMORY
To load device drivers in the config.sys file into high
memory, you must modify the "device=..." lines to read
"devicehigh=..." You can use any DOS editor to modify this
file. If you DOS 5.0 or DOS 6.0, you can use the DOS text
editor. Simply go to the root directory where you boot your
computer from (usually C:\ ) and type: EDIT CONFIG.SYS.
For example, if your config.sys file reads:
LASTDRIVE=D
BREAK=ON
FILES=30
BUFFERS=30
DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\DOS\SETVER.EXE
DEVICE=C:\CD-DRIVE\SLCD.SYS
DEVICE=C:\SNDBOARD\MVSOUND.SYS /M 1 220 5
DEVICE=SNDBK12.SYS 1 /I5
You can modify the file to read:
LASTDRIVE=D
BREAK=ON
FILES=30
BUFFERS=30
DOS=HIGH,UMB
DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICEHIGH=C:\DOS\SETVER.EXE
DEVICEHIGH=C:\CD-DRIVE\SLCD.SYS
DEVICEHIGH=C:\SNDBOARD\MVSOUND.SYS /M 1 220 5
DEVICE=SNDBK12.SYS 1 /I5
NOTE: The "device=sndbk12.sys ..." line cannot be
loaded into high memory. TIME Man of the Year uses
this device driver to play audio through your sound board.
TIME Man of the Year cannot find your sound card if
any of this line is loaded high. It must be loaded into
low memory.
When you are done editing the file, press the [ALT] key to
place your cursor on the Menu Bar. Select FILE, then SAVE.
Next press [ALT] again to place your cursor back on the
Menu Bar. Select FILE and then EXIT to return to DOS.
NOTE: If you are using DOS 5.0 you will have to load
drivers on a trial and error basis to figure out which ones
can, and which ones can't load into high memory. Read the
HIMEM.SYS section of your DOS user's manual for more
information about loading device drivers into high memory.
LOADING AUTOEXEC.BAT FILES INTO HIGH MEMORY
To load drivers (and commands) in the autoexec.bat file
into high memory, you must use the "loadhigh" command at
the beginning of each line. You can use any DOS editor to
modify this file. If you would like to use the editor
which comes with DOS 5.0 or higher, simply go to your root
directory where you boot from (e.g. C:\ ) and type:
EDIT AUTOEXEC.BAT.
For example, if your autoexec.bat file reads:
@ECHO OFF
C:WINDOWS\SMARTDRV.EXE
PATH=C:\DOS;C:\WINDOWS;C:\MOUSE
SET TEMP=C:\WINDOWS\TEMP
PROMPT $P$G
VER
SET MOUSE=C:\MOUSE
MOUSE
C:\CDROM\MSCDEX /D:cdrom001 /L:D /M:8
DOSKEY
You can modify the file to read:
@ECHO OFF
C:WINDOWS\SMARTDRV.EXE
PATH=C:\DOS;C:\WINDOWS;C:\MOUSE
SET TEMP=C:\WINDOWS\TEMP
PROMPT $P$G
VER
SET MOUSE=C:\MOUSE
LOADHIGH MOUSE
LOADHIGH C:\CDROM\MSCDEX.EXE /D:cdrom001 /L:D /M:8
LOADHIGH DOSKEY
When you are done editing the file, press the [ALT] key to
place your cursor on the Menu Bar. Select FILE, then SAVE.
Next press [ALT] again to place your cursor back on the
Menu Bar. Select FILE, and then EXIT to return to DOS.
NOTE: If you are using DOS 5.0 you will have to load
drivers on a trial and error basis to figure out which ones
can, and which ones can't. Read the HIMEM.SYS section of
your DOS user's manual for more information about loading
device drivers and software executables into high memory.

4. CD-ROM DRIVE REQUIREMENTS AND HINTS
MPC Compliancy
To get the best overall performance while running TIME Man
of the Year, you should have a MPC compliant CD-ROM drive.
Specifically, your CD-ROM player should have a data transfer
rate of 150 kilobytes per second or higher, a 390ms (or
lower) data access rate (also called average seek time),
and use less than 40% of your computer's CPU bandwidth.
Although you do not need an MPC compliant CD-ROM player to
run TIME Man of the Year, you should have an MPC
compliant player to run the videos smoothly. If your CD
drive is not MPC compliant, you may experience some
slowness or jerky movements during video playback.
If you are not sure whether your CD-ROM drive is MPC
compliant, check the documentation which came with your
drive, or contact the manufacturer of your CD-ROM drive.
ERROR MESSAGES
ERROR MESSAGE: Cannot Find TIME Man of the Year, or
ERROR MESSAGE: CDR101 - Cannot find compact disc
If the computer cannot find the TIME Man of the Year
program, or TIME cannot find the data files it needs
to start the program, it will display an error message
similar to the ones above. To correct this problem, you
should try the following:
Make sure the TIME Man of the Year compact disc is
correctly inserted into the CD-ROM player.
Check to make sure your CD-ROM drive is plugged in,
connected to your computer and powered on.
Make sure the CD-ROM drive letter is active. To
ensure the drive letter is active, reboot your
computer and go to the DOS prompt. At the DOS prompt,
type the letter of your CD-ROM drive and press
[ENTER]. If you still get an error message, try
putting in another CD and repeat this step.
If you cannot read either disc, try reinstalling your
CD-ROM software. Make sure you are using MSCDEX
extensions 2.0 or higher.
If you can read other discs, but not TIME Man of the
Year, call our technical support staff at (202) 244-4770.

5. SVGA GRAPHICS CARDS
If you have a video graphics card with 512K of memory (or
more) and a vesa driver loaded into either your computer's
bios (ie. local bus video) or installed in your config.sys
file, TIME Man of the Year will detect the vesa driver and
display all graphics in 256 colors.
If you do not have a vesa driver, or the program does not
detect a vesa driver installed on your system, all graphics
will be displayed in VGA mode (16 colors).
If you have an SVGA card with a vesa driver installed on
your system and you are having one of the following problems:
- cannot display graphics in 256 colors, or
- the graphics display is breaking up on the screen, or
- the graphics and/or menu screens have black boxes
across the top
you need to leave the program and reinstall your video card's
software so the vesa driver is active in DOS.
If the program is still having graphic display problems,
you need to manually invoke your vesa driver from DOS, and
then re-run the program without booting.
For example, if you have an ATI Ultra-Pro video card,
you should change to the MACH32 directory on your hard drive.
To do this, make sure you are at a DOS prompt and type CD\MACH32.
Then press [ENTER]. Now type VVESA and press [ENTER].
The vvesa.com file should fully invoke your vesa driver and
you then will be able to view all graphics correctly.
Another option is to automatically invoke the vesa driver each
time you run TIME Man of the Year by modifying the MOY93.BAT
file (see the "ATI Video Cards" section below).
If your graphics are breaking up badly and your are not sure
how to invoke you video card's vesa driver, you can run the
program in VGA mode. Running the program in VGA mode should
correct any graphic problems you are experiencing. To run
TIME Man of the Year in VGA mode, switch to the MOY93D
directory on your hard drive. Then type MOY93D V and press
[ENTER] to start the program.
ATI Video Cards
If you have an ATI video card you will need to manually invoke
the vesa driver before running TIME Man of the Year. To manually
invoke the driver, change to the MACH32 directory on your hard drive.
Make sure you are at a DOS prompt and type: CD\MACH32. Then press
[ENTER]. Now type VVESA and press [ENTER]. The vvesa.com file
should fully invoke your vesa driver and you will be able to
view all graphics correctly.
If you would like TIME Man of the Year to invoke the vesa driver
automatically, you can modify the MOY93.BAT file to include the
following line: C:\MACH32\VVESA. Use any DOS editor to modify
and then save the file.
Your MOY93.BAT file will then look like this:
@echo off
c:\mach32\vvesa
moy93d bst0
You will then be able to run the program properly each time
you type MOY93. If your video driver resides in another
directory, or has another file name, you should modify this
line accordingly.
6. VIDEO PLAYBACK HINTS
Videos are Slow or Jerky
Although you do not need an MPC compliant CD-ROM player to
run the program, you should have an MPC compliant player to
run the videos smoothly. Specifically, your CD-ROM player
must have a data transfer rate of 150 kilobytes per second
or higher, a 390ms or lower data access rate (a.k.a.
average seek time), and use less than 40% of your
computer's CPU bandwidth.
If you are not sure whether your CD-ROM drive is MPC
compliant, check the documentation which came with your
drive, or contact the manufacturer of your CD-ROM drive.
__________________________________________________
7. SOUND BOARD PROBLEMS AND HINTS
Problem: The Video Freezes After the First Few Frames
Make sure you have a Sound Blaster compatible sound board
or one of the other boards listed in the user's guide.
TIME Man of the Year does not run with the PC's internal
speaker, nor does it route sound through the CD-ROM player.
Your speakers must be connected to your sound board and not
your CD-ROM player.
Make sure you have properly installed the sound board
device drivers. If you are not sure whether your sound
board is properly installed, review your sound card
documentation. If you are not sure you if you have a sound
blaster compatible sound card, contact your sound card's
manufacturer.
Sound is Distorted or Choppy
-- Speakers: If the quality of your speakers is poor,
you may experience some distortion. If you want to
raise the volume but don't want to hear the
distortion, one solution to a poor set of speakers is
to lower the audio card volume control and use an
external amplifier. Also, make sure your speaker
cables are moved away from the power supply. This
will prevent background static and noise.
-- You may have a slow CD-ROM drive. You need an MPC
compliant CD-ROM drive to ensure the audio does not
sound choppy. Specifically, your CD-ROM player must
have a data transfer rate of 150 kilobytes per second
or higher, a 390ms (or lower) data access rate (also
called average seek time), and use less than 40% of
your computer's CPU bandwidth. If you do not have an
MPC compliant CD player, the ALMANAC may experience
long pauses when trying to access data off the disc.
This may cause the audio to sound choppy and out of
sync with the video.
-- Make sure the buffers on both your computer and CD-ROM
drive are set at 10 or higher.
