  3. Welcome to the Telecom CDROM!

  5. This CDROM contains the Telecom Archives from the ftp.lcs.mit.edu
  6. Internet site.  There are over 150 megabytes of documentation on
  7. telephones, communication, electronics, protocols, computer-telephony,
  8. etc.

  11. Here is a list of some important files and directories:

  13. 00global.txt        Global index of both discs
  14. 00_index.txt        Top Level index of this disc
  15. setup.exe           Windows Installation Program for this CDROM

  17. view.exe            File Browser/Uncompressor for MS-DOS
  18. utils/w16view.exe   File Browser for Windows 3.1.
  19. utils/w32view.exe   File Browser for Windows 95, Windows NT, and Win32s.

  26. Quick Start Instructions:
  27.  
  28.   Windows 3.1/NT:
  29.     Go to "File" menu under program manager and choose Run.  At the
  30.     Command Line box, type: "D:\setup", assuming 'D' is your cdrom drive.
  31.     This will install a group folder with icons for this cdrom.
  32.  
  33.   MSDOS Quick Start:
  34.     Change to your CDROM drive and type "view".
  35.     Example:
  36.           C:\> D:
  37.           D:\> view
  38.  
  39.   Windows 95:
  40.     Insert the cdrom into the cdrom drive.  This will automatically
  41.     start a CDROM browser program called WinView.
  42.     Alternatively, you can also install the program group and icon
  43.     by selecting the "Start" menu and choosing "Run".  At the Run
  44.     box, type: "D:\setup", assuming 'D' is your cdrom drive.

  46. Using the 00_INDEX.HTM:
  47.  
  48. We have included 00_index.htm files so the user may use a Web browser
  49. to view our disc.
  50.  
  51. In order to view this disc using these 00_index.htm files, point your
  52. Web browser to the root level 00_index.htm file.
  53.  
  54. For example, in Netscape/Mosaic:
  55.  
  56.         1) Choose File/Open File (or File/Open Local File with Mosaic)
  57.         2) Choose your CDROM Drive under "Drives"
  58.         3) Select the 00_index.htm file
  59.         4) Click on OK
  60.  
  61. The 00_index.htm files have been tested under Netscape 1.1 (Windows,
  62. Macintosh, and FreeBSD), Netscape 1.22 (Windows), Netscape 2.0b2,
  63. Mosaic 2.00 (Final Beta), and Microsoft Internet Explorer.

  67. WinView and View
  68.  
  69. To make browsing the disc easier, we have included the program WinView
  70. for Windows, and the program VIEW for MSDOS on the CDROM.  These programs
  71. allow you to page through index files, browse through directories on the
  72. CD, view documentations and uncompress/install the program(s) you want
  73. onto your hard disk.

  77. Shareware

  79. This disk contains many shareware programs and images. Shareware can
  80. be considered to be a sort of try before you buy system where you are
  81. expected to pay the program author a registration fee if you find the
  82. program or image useful.  You will find details of registration
