  33. Internet.  This newsgroup makes the assumption that you already have access
  34. to the Internet.  Queries about gaining access to the Internet should be
  35. directed to alt.internet.access.wanted.n access to the Internet.

  37. The first method to gain access to the Internet is by getting an account
  38. on a public access bulletin board system that is connected to the Internet.
  39. There are a growing number of such systems available (over 25).
  40.  
  41. Information on dialup access to the Internet is available in the
  42. "Public Dialup Internet Access List (PDIAL)".  The list is posted at regular
  43. intervals to alt.internet.access.wanted and is maintained by
  44. Peter Kaminski <kaminski@netcom.com>.  A copy of the PDIAL is available
  45. via anonymous FTP from GVL.Unisys.COM under the name /pub/pubnet/pdial.
  46. PDIAL may be obtained by email from the Information Deli archive server.
  47. To receive the most recently published PDIAL, send email with the subject
  48. "Send PDIAL" to "info-deli-server@netcom.com".
  49. To subscribe to a list which receives future editions as they are
  50. published, send email with the subject "Subscribe PDIAL" to
  51. "info-deli-server@netcom.com".  To receive both the most recent and
  52. future editions, send both messages.

  55. with a network service provider who offers a "Dialin" service.  See the

  61. Traditionally, connections to the Internet were dedicated connections.
  62. This is still the most common type of connection.  Monthly costs for the
  63. connection range anywhere from $250 per month [plus line charges] for a
  64. dial-up 9600 bps connection to $4,000 [plus line charges] for a T1 [1.44Mbps]
  65. connection.  There is also an initial one time startup fee of anywhere
  66. from $100 to $8,000 [plus equipment charges].

  68. Some service providers are also offering part-time dial-up connections.
  69. Customers share a set of phone lines and dial-up when needed.  This is
  70. usually less expensive than dedicated dial-up connections for customers
  71. who need a connection less than 80 hours per month.  Monthly costs range
  72. from $40-100 per month [plus line charges] plus an hourly charge of $2-4.

  74. Some service providers have begun to offer a new "Dialin" service.  The
  75. name for Dailin service varies from vendor to vendor.  The Dialin service
  76. is usually provided as a way for Internet connected users to connect back
  77. to their home sites from remote locations.  But most service providers do
  78. not limit their service to this audience, it is open to people not already
  79. on the Internet.  The Dialin service provides either a terminal server
  80. connection [with password] or an account on the service provider's equipment
  81. [with password] which permits you to use telnet to connect to other sites
  82. on the Internet.  This service differs from the normal "dial-up" IP services
  83. because it does not require the user to run any IP software like PPP
  84. (Point-to-Point Protocol) or SLIP (Serial Line IP).  The cost for this
  85. service usually range from $35 to $250 per month [plus line charges].
  86. There is also an initial $35 to $500 connection fee [plus equipment charges].
