  37.              MCI Mail Global Access from 27 Countries
  38.  
  39. Rye Brook, NY (USA) -- March 2, 1992--MCI International, a
  40. subsidiary of MCI Communications Corp. (MCI), today began
  41. providing direct access from an initial 27 countries to
  42. one of the world's most popular electronic mail services, MCI
  43. Mail, through an in-country telephone call. Additional
  44. countries will be added throughout 1992.
  45.  
  46. MCI Mail Global Access(sm) service provides a simple, high quality,
  47. low-cost alternative to a packet service subscription. MCI Mail Global
  48. Access also provides portability not previously available.  In
  49. order to reach MCI Mail, traveling users simply dial a country-
  50. specific phone number from their computer terminal in any
  51. of the 27 countries.

  53. Until now, subscribers accessing MCI Mail from outside the
  54. United States had to arrange for a separate subscription to
  55. each country's packet switch service and pay the provider of
  56. that service for both the amount of time spent online and the
  57. number of characters sent and received.  MCI Mail Global Access
  58. simplifies the process. Some advantages of MCI Mail's new
  59. service are:
  60.  
  61.         * Easy to use -- the same logon procedure will
  62.           work in virtually all of the 27 countries.
  63.         * Available today -- a separate subscription is not
  64.           needed, which is especially important to travelling
  65.           subscribers such as journalists.
  66.         * Cost savings -- the price of this service is (U.S.) $0.50
  67.           per minute, billed in half-minute increments after a
  68.           one-minute minimum.
  69.         * Simplified billing -- access charges are billed on a
  70.           per-minute basis instead of time and volume.
  71.         * Consolidated invoice -- charges for access will appear
  72.           on the MCI Mail invoice along with message charges.

  86. MCI Mail subscribers can obtain instructions and access
  87. telephone numbers online by typing HELP PHONES INTERNATIONAL
  88. at any Command prompt.  Literature about MCI Mail Global
  89. Access with access telephone numbers can be obtained by
  90. contacting MCI Mail Customer Support at 800-444-6245 (outside
  91. the US call +1 202-833-8484).  MCI International has 64 local
  92. offices in 52 countries, Puerto Rico and Guam, as well as
  93. local MCI Mail international distributors covering over 30
  94. countries to provide premier support and service worldwide.

  96. MCI Mail provides a complete range of delivery services
  97. including electronic mail, fax, telex, hardcopy postal and
  98. courier delivery worldwide.  The service also offers gateways
  99. to office automation, LAN and PC environments, and has been at
  100. the forefront in establishing global public network
  101. interconnections utilizing both X.400 and proprietary
  102. protocols. In addition, MCI Mail offers MCI EDI 400, an
  103. electronic data interchange (EDI) service.  MCI is currently
  104. interconnected with over 51 X.400 public services, in 25 countries.

  149. A: More countries will be added later this year and in years to come. Meanwhile,
  150. customers in countries not on the list will continue to access MCI Mail in the
  151. manner they have been using-- primarily by subscribing to a local packet switch

  155. Q: How does it work?
  156.  
  157. A: Users log-on in the following manner:
  158.  
  159.      1. Dial appropriate access number, wait for connect.
  160.  
  161.      2. Press <RETURN> twice or until a "#" prompt appears.
  162.  
  163.      3. Type C and press <RETURN>. (What you type may not appear on
  164.      your screen; this is normal.)
  165.  
  166.      4. At the "CENTER:" prompt, type MCI,MAIL and press <RETURN>.
  167.      (Again, what you type may not appear on the screen.)

  169.      5. At the "Please enter your user name:" prompt; type your MCI
  170.      Mail username and press <RETURN>, then type your password and
  171.      press <RETURN>. When you see "Connection initiated. . .Opened."
  172.      you are now logged onto MCI Mail.

  175. Q: What about users of Lotus Express?
  176.  
  177. A: They will need a connection string to log-on. The connection string is shown
  178. below and will be both published online and supplied to the field.

  182. Q: What speeds and protocols are supported?
  183.  
  184. A: The speeds and protocols supported vary from location to location; however,
  185. the majority of locations support speeds from 300 to 2400 bps with MNP5
  186. error-correction. The access list that has been printed in hardcopy form and
  187. published online indicates exactly what access speeds and protocols are
  188. available from any particular access number.

  191. Q: What does it cost to use this access?
  192.  
  193. A: Users will pay (US) $0.50 per minute from the time they are logged onto MCI
  194. Mail until the time they exit. The charge is based on a one-minute minimum,
  195. with 1/2 minute intervals applying thereafter; each fraction of a minute
  196. will be rounded up to the nearest 1/2-minute. This is the same billing
  197. procedure that is currently in place for Canadian and domestic Tymnet access
  198. charges.

  200. The price is the same no matter what country the user accesses from; also note
  201. that we are only charging for time spent online-- not for characters
  202. sent/received. Users will realize significant savings in many cases when
  203. compared to packet switch service access.

  206. Q: How will the user be billed?
  207.  
  208. A: The access will appear as a line item on the user's MCI Mail invoice; it will
  209. be labelled "MCI Mail Global Access".

  212. Q: What about access problems-- who will help?

  214. A: Problems with MCI Mail Global Access should be reported to MCI Mail Customer
  215. Support like any domestic access or system problem.

  252. |access numbers support the "CCITT" standards used
  253. |in much of the world rather than the "Bell"
  254. |standard used in modems built for use in the
  255. |United States. This difference is important only
  256. |if accessing at 300 bps, as the two standards are
  257. |NOT compatible at that speed. Numbers supporting
  258. |ONLY CCITT 300 bps are designated "300 CCITT;"
  259. |most U.S. modems will not be usable on them.

  261. |Numbers designated "MNP4" support the MNP
  262. |error-correction protocol; numbers designated
  263. |"MNP5" support both the MNP error-correction and
  264. |data-compression protocols. Check the documen-
  265. |tation supplied with your modem for further
  266. |details on how to use these protocols.

  268. |There is a charge of US$0.50/minute to connect
  269. |via MCI Mail Global Access. These connect-time

  281. |LOCAL CALLING:  Normally does not require the use
  282. |of the city code.

  284. |REGIONAL CALLING:  Normally requires use of the
  285. |city code. Some telephone networks require that
  286. |a 1 or 0 precede the city code.

  288. |INTERNATIONAL CALLING:  Requires an international
  289. |dialing prefix followed by the IDDD code, city
  290. |code, and local telephone number.

  292. |Consult the local telephone company or PTT for
  293. |additional directions and explanations in the use
  294. |of telephone dialing and services.
